Types of Bets in Roulette
Roulette, a game of chance, has been played since the 17th century and is one of the most popular casino games worldwide. It is based on the Italian game Biribi and features a wheel with numbered compartments or pockets.
The game has a high house edge and offers players little chance of beating the odds, even with sophisticated strategies. However, if you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with lower bets to reduce your risks.
There are three types of bets on the roulette table: inside bets, outside bets and announced bets. In all three types of bets, the payout odds vary depending on the number of pockets a ball lands in.
Inside Bets
In the roulette game, players place bets on a single number or groups of numbers. They can also bet on the color red or black, the odd or even number, or whether the number is high (19-36) or low (1-18).
While a variety of combinations can be made, the most common are: inside and outside bets, straight up and column bets. The payouts for these bets depend on the number of pockets a ball landed in, and the house edge.
The game of roulette consists of a wheel with metal partitions around the rim. These partitions are numbered from 1 to 36, with each division alternating red and black.
On American roulette wheels, there is an additional green division numbered 0 as well. These two extra divisions add to the house edge and make playing Roulette a much less profitable proposition than European Roulette.
Another type of bet on the roulette table is called a “street” bet. This is a bet that covers 3 numbers and requires only one chip. The player places the chip on the end of any street, on any intersection of the streets, or on the edge of both adjoining streets.
A player can also make an inside bet on a street by placing the chips between the first two numbers and the second number. This bet is similar to the street bet, but it has a higher house edge.
Announced Bets
Among the many announced bets on the roulette table, there are some that are especially special, and they have their own French names. These are: Les Voisins du Zero, Le Tiers Du Cylindre and Les Orphelins.
The earliest versions of the wheel in Europe had both a single and double zero. Originally, the single zero was red, and the double zero was black. In the 1800s, these numbers were changed to green to avoid confusion.
The rules of the game of roulette are relatively simple, but the fact that there are 38 numbered sectors makes it a very difficult game to predict accurately. The house edge is also very high, which can result in a drain on your wallet. For this reason, it is a good idea to limit your bets and play a single game only if you have enough money to support it.
